Psalm 133
A song of ascents. Of David.

1 How good and pleasant it is
when God's people live together in unity!

2 It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron's beard,
down on the collar of his robe.

3 It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the LORD bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.

This entire Psalm is only three verses long. It was probably written on the back of a napkin from a Jerusalem diner. OK, probably not. It's such a small work, but its subject matter is very important. Unity is what the human race longs for.

Unity makes us happy. If you think about the best times in your life, they probably involve doing something with a group of family members or friends. If you have ever been on a sports team or a mission crew, that worked together like a "well oiled machine," and won the game or completed the project with seemingly no effort at all, you know the joy of being in unity.

Synonyms for "unity" include: accord, harmony, interconnection, oneness, peace--it sounds exactly like the kinds of things God wants for us. Imagine if all of humanity lived in unity!

God intended for us to live in unity--unity with God first, and unity with one another second. Start by making sure your relationship with God is strong and healthy. Then start improving the relationships with those around you--family and close friends. Start working through the things that are keeping you from a sense of harmony with the people around you. Concentrate instead on the things you have in common with God's fellow children.

If today's devotion spoke to you in a particular way and you feel led to share your thoughts with others, please do so.
